Badai tropis Winston dengan kekuatan mencapai 330 km/jam memporak-prandakan negara kepulauan Fiji akhir pekan lalu, dengan 10 orang dipastikan meninggal dunia serta ratusan rumah hancur. Inilah badai topan paling buruk dalam beberapa tahun terakhir yang pernah melanda negara itu.
Perdana Menteri Fiji Frank Bainimarama menyatakan pihak berwenang kini sedang memantau dan mendata dampak kerusakan yang ditimbulkan oleh badai tropis ini.
Badan kemanusiaan PBB OCHA mengungkapkan sekitar 150 rumah hancur dan sekitar 60 lainnya rusak berat di wilayah timur Fiji yang mencakup daerah Kadavu, Lau, Lomaiviti and Rotuma.
Namun belum dilaporkan kondisi di tiga wilayah Fiji lainnya.
Pasokan dilaporkan terhenti, tiang-tiang telepon rubuh dan menghalangi jalanan, semakin mempersulit penyaluran bantuan.
Sampai Senin (22/2/2016) pagi banyak daerah masih belum pulih pasokan listrik dan airnya.
Badai tropis berkategori 5 ini diperkirakan sebagai yang paling buruk yang menerjang belahan Bumi selatan dan meninggalkan jejak kerusakan seiring dengan pergerakannya ke arah Barat meninggalkan Fiji.
Di puncak badai tercatat kekuatan angin mencapai 330 km/jam semnetara kekuatan angin rata-rata berkisar 220 km/jam.
"Kerusakan menyebar di berbagai wilayah. Rumah penduduk hancur, dan sejumlah daerah mengalami banjir. Rakyat bingung harus bagaimana," kata PM Bainimarama.
Pemerintah menyatakan masa darurat selama 30 hari.
Badai topan ini meninggalkan Fiji dan bergerak ke arah Vanuatu hari Minggu sore, namun diperkirakan akan bergerak ke selatan ke arah perairan Pasifik antara Selandia Baru dan Kaledonia Baru dalam beberapa hari ke depan.
